Music Video for DWNTWN
For this project I was commissioned to build a "prop" card house and also to build and rebuild it multiple times on set for the "collapse" segments.
For the record, I absolutely despise making "prop" card houses. Believe it or not, gluing a structure together greatly complicates the process. I would MUCH prefer genuine freestanding cardstacking any day of the week. Building with glue takes way longer, is more cumbersome and intricate to make, not to mention that it seems like the ultimate form of cheating. Unfortunately, for video production schedules and needs, they are sometimes necessary.
I ended up building the structure in "modules" so that I could easily add or remove large chunks to make it look like different phases in the construction phase. I made sure to design the building as such that it could really be built freestanding if needed. Between camera setups, I was asked to rebuild the base of the tower multiple times so they could record the collapse halfway through building. I taught the two leads the basics of building a cell and how to place cards so that they could look authentic in the shots where they are working on the card structure.
