Cardistry-Con 2017
Cardistry-Con is an annual conference for cardists. In 2017 it was held in Los Angeles and I was invited by the organizers Dan and Dave Buck to share my cardstacking art with the conference participants. In a corner of the main room, I built a tall tower, a stadium bowl, a smaller cylindrical tower with a conical top, and a few other small structures over the course of two days.
I enjoyed interacting with the conference participants and being able to finally meet several people who I was already familiar with through Instagram, where our shared love for playing cards helped us to connect in the virtual world. Our uses of playing cards are quite different. What cardists are able to do with playing cards amazes me - the amount of required dexterity and practice to be able to make cards seem to effortlessly dance through the hands is very different from that required for cardstacking. However, we are similar in that we all devote a huge amount of ourselves to a niche craft that flourishes on innovation and creates beauty by using a familiar medium (playing cards) in an amazing manner.
